A Side of Packer
Players
That Fans Rarely Get to
See
Green Bay, WI - June 5, 2002 - When thinking
of Green Bay Packer football players, what words come to
mind
fierce, rugged, aggressive, violent? What probably
doesn't come to mind are attributes such as tender, loving,
submissive and dependent. Yet that's the side of these warriors
that Gill Byrd would like you to see.
A new TV and radio show, The Players Chapel,
debuted in Milwaukee. Developed by Gill Byrd, Good, Better and Best, LLC,
the show is dedicated to discipling young Christians by
using the star appeal of professional athletes.
"Our passion is in discipling young
Christians" said Gill Byrd. "So many kids look up to the Packers, it
makes sense to use some of the strong Christian players
as role models for our youth" he added.
The premier show featured current and
former Packer players including Kabeer Gbaja Biamila, Ryan
Longwell, Josh Bidwell, Bryce Paup, Bill Schroeder and Allen
Rossum. Rather than focusing on their gladiator side, it
shows the vulnerable side of these players and their wives
through interviews and bible studies that focus on the power
of prayer.
An eleven year veteran of the San Diego
Chargers, Gill spent two years working in the Packer front
office. He left the Packers in 2001 and currently serves as a defensive back coach for the Chicago Bears. The Players Chapel TV
and radio program represents his first effort at using the
mass media to disciple youth. This pilot show aired and focused on the Packers throughout the state
of Wisconsin. Subsequent shows are planned,
using players from other NFL teams and airing nationally.
Heart of a Lion is dedicated to using
the mass media to disciple young Christians. Gill has also
started two related organizations. The 1st
Quarter disciples youth through an educational curriculum.
The
Players Chapel Program is a non-profit grant writing
institution which provides financial support to Christian
organizations.
